Barracks Buildings

The Curved Barracks Range

This two-storey block which curves around the western perimeter of the site, was built to accommodate the soldiers, horses and gun carriages of the resident cavalry regiment. Through the arches on the ground floor are displays about Fermanagh’s archaeological and historic monuments.

The Magazine and Barrack Store

The Magazine, built in the early 19th century, was specifically designed to store ammunition and gunpowder. Access was through the adjacent Barrack Store where persons donned safe, sterile clothing – simple shifts – before entering the potentially dangerous ammunitions store. (This was the origin of ‘shift’ work!). A thick blast wall surrounded both Magazine and Store and access to the Magazine was carefully restricted.
