Enniskillen Castle

Inniskillings Museum

In 1689, two volunteer regiments were formed at Enniskillen Castle to support King William of Orange and defend Enniskillen against the army of King James I. These regiments became the Royal Inniskilling Dragoons and the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. They distinguished themselves in the Williamite wars - particularly during the Battle of the Boyne - and according to tradition were conferred by King William with the right to use the symbol of a castle flying a St. George flag on their regimental badges and colours.

The Inniskillings Museum, housed in the Castle Keep, covers the history of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. It features a wide range of uniforms, weapons, regimental memorabilia and medals, including eight Victoria Crosses awarded during World War 1 and the bugle that sounded in 1916 at the Battle of the Somme.
