The finalised programme for this year’s weekend is as follows:
Friday 11 May
11am Congregate at Enniskillen Castle Museums. Welcome and enrolment with tea, coffee and biscuits. Followed by: Tour of the Maguire stronghold at Enniskillen Castle, originally built over 600 years ago for Hugh ‘The Hospitable’ Maguire.
12.30pm Leave Enniskillen Castle Museums for Round O Jetty. (10 minute walk)
1pm – 3pm Boat trip & tour of Devenish Island with its distinctive Round Tower. From the 6th century onwards, the Island became a place of great religious and spiritual importance as well as a burial place for a branch of the Maguire family. Lunch of Irish Stew, wheaten bread & Guinness will be included.
3.15pm Arrive back at Enniskillen Castle Museums. Tea, Coffee and Scones served. Followed by: A talk on the fascinating story of the Maguire Chalices. There are records of 5 important chalices associated with the Maguires. This talk highlights the history of the chalices from their making to their current locations in Ireland, Scotland and Canada.
4.30pm Approximate time the afternoon session ends. This is your own FREE time. You may wish to use this time to explore the island town of Enniskillen, have your dinner at a local restaurant or simply relax at your accommodation before the evening session begins at 7.30pm.
7.30pm Congregate at Enniskillen Castle Museums. Keynote Speaker Seamas Mac Annaidh, Fermanagh historian and author will talk on ‘In Praise of the Maguires: Medieval Bardic Poetry’ Followed by: An evening of music and storytelling with wine reception. Saturday 12 May
9am Depart Enniskillen Castle Museums on tour bus Followed by: Field trips to important Maguire sites at Balfour Castle built on the site of a Maguire stronghold; the Maguire burial site at Aghalurcher Graveyard
11am Field trip to Sgiath Gabhra - the inauguration site of the Maguire chieftains of Fermanagh at Cornashee Followed by: Lunch at the Mummers Centre, Knockninny with a medieval food demonstration After lunch visit continues to Monea Castle, built nearby the site of the first Castle constructed for Hugh ‘The Hospitable’ Maguire.
5pm Approximate time of return to Enniskillen Castle
Sunday 13 May
2pm – 5pm Family History Roadshow. Members from the Fermanagh Family History Society will be on hand to give one-to-one advice on the different resources available for researching Fermanagh family histories. These will be allocated on a first-come basis to those who have booked for the Saturday and Sunday programme.
The full cost of Friday and Saturday’s programme of talks, tours, lunches and refreshments is £100 (£80 for Friends of Fermanagh County Museum). In addition, there will be a series of 10 minute one-to-one Family History Consultation Sessions on Sunday 13 May. These are free-of-charge but will be allocated on a first-come basis to those who have booked for the Saturday and Sunday programme.
