Enniskillen Workhouse was built on the site of the present Erne Hospital at Cornagrade on the banks of the River Erne. Today, only the entrance block at the rear of the hospital building remains. It was built to accommodate 1000 inmates. Its doors opened on December 1st 1845. From December 1845 to the spring of 1851 1042 males and 998 females died in the workhouse.
