The closure of the Railways. |
| |
| Description |
The railway closing? Well, of course, they didn't use it; that was the tragedy of it all. You see as everybody got a car, they neglected the railway. They would drive their car to Belfast and particularly in the goods, in the transport of goods. The railway was alright but it took work to put the goods on the train in Belfast and when the train arrived in Enniskillen with a load of goods it had to be carted from the station up to a shop or store or wherever it went to and that was more work. Whereas, nowadays, these goods can be loaded onto a truck, at the factory or mill, and be delivered right into the shop without any handling. Y'see it cut out a lot of handling. And in that way expenses were cut down of course and the railways were no longer needed. And the railways were closed at the end of the day. So it was missed indeed, but tragically it wasn't used when it was available. And you couldn't have blamed the government for shutting it up when no one was using it or very few people were using it anyway and it became uneconomic to run.
