Drawing the Dole. |
| |
| Description |
People used to get the Outdoor Relief. Now maybe, some man would call down, and if he seen three new cups on the dresser, you were asked where you got them. It was even if they seen you smokin’, or seen you goin’ in till a public house, that was the money cut off like, you didn't, they looked at everything you had. If you knew they were comin’, if you had anything like a wee old wireless or something, you had to hide it you see, because it was what you call a 'Means Test.' And even when you went, when you were signin’ for work, we used to have to go to wood-work twice a week, and if you didn't go you lost your two shillings for that day. You got two shillings a day on the dole when you signed on. You had to go to have wood-work twice a week.
