Title Commentary - Enniskillen Castle in Gaelic Hands.

Description Enniskillen Castle guarding one of the few passes into Gaelic Ulster remained the home and stronghold of the Maguires, the rulers and chieftains of Fermanagh. Threats to the Maguires and Fermanagh came from rival clans but its situation provided a safe stronghold from attack. All was to change at the end of the 16th century. Elizabeth I of England determined to complete the conquest of Ireland by subduing the barbarians of Gaelic Ulster. Hugh Maguire was the first Irish lord to rebel in a war that was to last nine years.
