This section of our website invites you to take an historical journey around County Fermanagh from Early Christian times to the development of industries in the second half of the nineteenth century. From castles to country houses, from monasteries to tileries, this section highlights examples of some of rural Fermanagh’s rich heritage.
Over the years, the historical landscape of Fermanagh has inspired artists, photographers, writers and historians to record and preserve its beauty and importance for future generations. On show here are objects, documents and photographs belonging to Fermanagh County Museum. The former Curator of the Museum, Helen Lanigan Wood, has selected the works on display and written the associated information.
Helen Lanigan Wood began work as the first Curator of Fermanagh County Museum in 1976. She then spent the next thirty years developing an important and varied collection relating to the County’s history, as well as setting up an award-winning museum service with a national reputation. She retired in 2005. In 2007, Helen Lanigan Wood was awarded a Fellowship by the Museums Association in a scheme supported by the Monument Trust. The aim of the project was to pass on her knowledge to her successors.
