The pilgrim trail

When discussing how they might contribute to the exhibition the Cavan Day Group decided to explore the theme of travelling back and forth across the border.

They were struck by the fact that travel across the area that makes up present day Cavan and Fermanagh had been central to the past, particularly in early Christian times when the Erne had been a pilgrim route to Saint Patrick's Purgatory. A pilgrim is someone who undertakes a special journey and for the Day Group the project gave them an opportunity to undertake a special journey:

"Meeting with and getting to know the 'New Horizons' group from Enniskillen has provided us with the opportunity to better understand the diverse culture and heritage of the border area."

With this in mind they produced their own Early Christian Pilgrimage Trail based on the early Christian sites and symbols associated with the River Erne.
