This cross-border touring exhibition explores a largely forgotten episode in the turbulent months following the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in December 1921. In early 1922, during a border raid in Enniskillen in an attempt to kidnap prominent unionists, a number of Irish republican prisoners were arrested. The men were later transferred to Peterhead Prison in Scotland.

The exhibition highlights the political instability of the period, the harsh conditions associated with Peterhead Prison, and the eventual release of the prisoners in January 1926. A number of the men had Fermanagh connections.

As part of the exhibition closing event, Dr Padraig McGarty will give a talk on ‘The Forgotten Peterhead Men’ on Saturday, 19 September at 6.30pm. Dr McGarty is the author of the book ‘Leitrim: The Irish Revolution, 1912-23’, Four Courts Press, 2020.
