2. Barrack Coach House

In 1796, Enniskillen Castle was refurbished as a barracks at a cost of £7,000. The Castle Barracks continued to expand throughout the 19th century and many of these buildings survive today.

Until 1827, the area occupied by the Barrack Coach House was outside the site of the barracks as we now see it.  Early 19th century maps show it as an open space. In 1879, the site had a ball court area in this corner of the Castle Barrack.

In 1881, the space was transformed into a Coach House, later modified in 1905 and referred to as the Motor House. In 1922, the upper floor of the building was still being used as a barracks. Enniskillen Castle was decommissioned as a military barracks in 1927.

Prior to housing museum galleries, the most recent tenant was the Social Services before the building lay empty for several decades.

Today, the Barrack Coach House is the first stop on the tour of the museum galleries. The building houses the Lakeland Galleries, the Full Circle Art Gallery and Island Town Gallery.
