3. Curved Range

This two-storey block was built to accommodate soldiers, horses and gun carriages of the resident cavalry regiment.  It is located on the site of the former outer wall of the Maguire Castle and Cole’s bawn wall.

After the army took control of the site in 1796, they began to add new buildings. By 1822, this area appears as a curved range – the ground floor with stables and gun sheds for the artillery while upstairs there was a barracks and hospital. Some of the perimeter wall may have been incorporated into the range.

Use of the upper floors as a military hospital was short-lived. Soldiers being treated for ailments and diseases contracted as a result of long military campaigns needed clean and hygienic conditions.

By the latter part of the 19th century, the building housed stores, sleeping quarters, two cook’s houses and an ‘ablusion’ house.  By 1879 the ground floor was no longer for gun sheds. In the 1950s, the building had a number of occupants: the County Council (stores), Territorial Auxiliary Association and the RUC River Police.

Today, the Curved Range houses part of the Inniskillings Museum displays, including a Gift Shop and Reception/Information area.
