Heritage Centre
Today, the Heritage Centre houses two temporary exhibition spaces that change throughout the year, as well as the Cosy Corner and the Fermanagh Hearth Gallery.
History of the Heritage Centre:
Designed by architect, Richard Pierce, the Heritage Centre served as the main building for Fermanagh County Museum. The building is thought to be close to the location of William Cole’s house built while he was repairing the Castle. 1990 excavations of the site prior to the building of the Heritage Centre failed to uncover any evidence of the house. Fermanagh County Museum had previously been located in the Castle Keep. In 1993, the museum exhibits moved into their new home in the Heritage Centre.
Richard Pierce clearly drew inspiration from the older buildings on site. The arches on the ground floor echoing those of the old stable block or Curved Range; while the small windows on the first floor reflect the design of the Keep’s original slit windows. The roof of the building is sympathetic with the original roof of the Castle Keep.
